Cough Syrup

A cough can keep you up at night and wear you down during the day. This range of cough syrup covers licensed cough medicine from Benylin for chesty and dry coughs, alongside soothing syrups such as Bronchostop, Broncho 5 in 1, Zarbee's, Pharmony Throat Syrup and Glycerine and Aniseed.

The first step is to match the syrup to the type of cough. Benylin Chesty Non Drowsy is for a chesty cough that brings up mucus, while Benylin Dry Cough and Benylin Dual Action Dry are for a dry, tickly cough. For younger family members there are Benylin Child Chesty and Child Cough Dry, Bronchostop Junior, Aya Kids Honey and Lemon and Zarbee's 2+ Years. Products differ by age, so check the age on the pack before choosing. Always read the label and the patient information leaflet before use. Do not take two products with the same ingredient, and speak to your pharmacist or doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or take other medicines.

All products here are stocked at Leahy's Pharmacy, a family-run Irish pharmacy in Tralee, Co. Kerry, and our pharmacists can help you choose a syrup that suits the cough. A cough that lasts more than three weeks should be checked by your GP. For a scratchy throat, see our sore throat lozenges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a chesty and a dry cough syrup? +
A chesty cough brings up mucus, while a dry cough is tickly and produces none. Benylin makes separate products for each, such as Benylin Chesty Non Drowsy and Benylin Dry Cough, so choosing the right one matters. If you are not sure which type of cough you have, describe it to our pharmacist, who can suggest a suitable syrup.
Which cough syrups are made for children? +
This range includes Benylin Child Chesty Non Drowsy, Benylin Child Cough Dry, Bronchostop Junior, Aya Kids Honey and Lemon and Zarbee's Cough and Sore Throat Syrup 2+ Years. Each has its own age range, so check the age on the pack and follow the leaflet. For babies and young children, or if you are unsure, speak to our pharmacist before giving any cough product.
What are soothing syrups like Bronchostop and Glycerine and Aniseed? +
These are syrups designed to coat and soothe the throat, and many people keep one in the press for coughs and colds. Bronchostop, Broncho 5 in 1, Pharmony Throat Syrup and Glycerine and Aniseed Soothing Syrup each have their own directions and age guidance. Read the label before use, and ask our pharmacist if you take other medicines.
When should I see a doctor about a cough? +
See your GP if a cough lasts more than three weeks, if you cough up blood, have chest pain, find it hard to breathe, or feel very unwell with a high temperature. These signs should always be checked. Seek advice sooner for babies, older people and anyone with a long-term condition. Our pharmacist can also tell you whether you need to see a doctor.
