Nappy Rash Cream

Nappy rash is very common in babies, and most rashes are mild and settle with good nappy care. This range brings together nappy rash cream and barrier ointments from Bepanthen, Sudocrem, Caldease and Weleda, for use at changing time to help protect and soothe your baby's skin.

Barrier ointments such as Bepanthen form a protective layer between the skin and a wet or dirty nappy, which is why many parents use them at every change. Creams such as Sudocrem are thicker and are often chosen when the skin already looks red and sore. Weleda Nappy Change Cream is made with calendula for parents who prefer a plant-based option. Whichever you use, change nappies often, clean the area gently, let the skin dry fully and apply a thin layer rather than a thick coat.

All products here are stocked at Leahy's Pharmacy, a family-run Irish pharmacy in Tralee, Co. Kerry, and our pharmacists are always happy to look at a rash or answer questions. Speak to your GP or public health nurse if the rash does not improve, spreads, has spots or blisters, or your baby has a temperature. For more baby care, see our baby range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use a nappy cream or a barrier ointment? +
Barrier ointments, such as Bepanthen, are often used at every nappy change to help protect healthy skin from wetness. Thicker creams, such as Sudocrem, are commonly chosen when the skin already looks red or sore. Many parents keep both. If you are unsure which suits your baby, our pharmacist can help you choose.
How often should I apply nappy rash cream? +
Most products can be applied at each nappy change, but always follow the directions on the pack. Clean the area gently, pat it dry or let it air for a few minutes, then apply a thin layer. A thick layer is not more effective and can stop the nappy absorbing properly. Changing nappies often matters as much as the cream you use.
When should I see a doctor about nappy rash? +
See your GP or public health nurse if the rash has not improved after a few days of good nappy care, if it spreads, has spots, blisters or broken skin, or if your baby seems unwell or has a temperature. Some rashes, such as thrush, need a different product, so it is worth getting them checked rather than continuing with the same cream.
Can I use nappy rash cream from birth? +
Many nappy rash creams and ointments, including Bepanthen, are suitable from birth, but check the pack of the product you choose, as age guidance can differ. If your baby was born early, has very sensitive skin or another skin condition, ask our pharmacist or your public health nurse before using a new product.
