Pregnancy Tests

Home testing gives a quick, private answer when a period is late or you are hoping to conceive. This range brings together pregnancy test kits from Clearblue and Clear & Simple, from midstream sticks that show lines in a result window to digital tests that display the result in words, so there is no line to interpret.

The main differences are how early a test can be used and how the result is shown. Ultra early tests are designed for use before the day your period is due, while standard tests are usually taken from the day of the missed period. Multipacks with two or three tests suit anyone who wants to test again a few days later. Whichever you choose, follow the timing in the leaflet, as reading a result too early or too late can affect it.

Every test here is stocked at Leahy's Pharmacy, a family-run Irish pharmacy in Tralee, Co. Kerry. If a result is unexpected, your cycle is irregular or you take a medicine that may affect testing, our pharmacists can talk it through with you in confidence. If you are planning a pregnancy, see our pregnancy vitamins and supplements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a digital and a standard pregnancy test? +
Both detect the pregnancy hormone hCG in urine. A standard test shows lines in a result window, which you read yourself against the leaflet. A digital test such as Clearblue Digital shows the result in words on a small screen, which many people find easier to read. Both need to be used and timed exactly as described in the instructions for a reliable result.
How early can I take a pregnancy test? +
It depends on the test. Ultra early tests, such as Clearblue Digital Ultra Early, can be used a few days before your period is due, as set out on the pack. Testing early means less hormone is present, so a negative result may need repeating. Standard tests are usually taken from the day your period is expected, when the hormone level is higher.
Does it matter what time of day I test? +
Many tests can be used at any time of day, but first morning urine is usually more concentrated, which can help when you are testing early. Drinking a lot of fluid just before testing can dilute the urine. Instructions differ between brands, so check the leaflet that comes with your test before you start.
What should I do if the result is faint or unclear? +
Read the result only within the time window stated in the leaflet, as anything that appears later should be ignored. If the result is unclear, test again with a new test after a couple of days. If results conflict or you are still unsure, speak to our pharmacist or your GP, who can advise on what to do next.
