Spectra

Expressing at home is easier when the pump and the parts that touch the breast are the right fit, and this page covers both. The range includes the S1 and S2 double electric pumps, the smaller S9, complete expression sets in 24mm and 28mm, breast shield sets from 20mm up to 32mm, backflow protectors, silicone tubing, teats in several flow rates, milk storage bottles and glass bottles in 120ml and 240ml.

Shield size is worth checking first. Sizing follows nipple diameter rather than breast size, and a shield that is too large or too small can make a session uncomfortable or slow, which is why sets are sold separately from the pump and in several sizes. The S1 has an internal rechargeable battery, so it can be used away from a socket, while the S2 is mains powered and stays where it is set up. Backflow protectors and silicone tubing are consumable parts and are replaced from time to time rather than lasting the life of the pump. A few Maymom parts described as Spectra compatible also appear here; they are made by another manufacturer to fit Spectra pumps.

Spectra breast pumps and the pump parts supplied with them are CE-marked medical devices, so read the instructions for use supplied with the pump and follow the cleaning and sterilising steps for each part. These pumps are supplied for single-user use, so pumps and milk-path parts should not be shared between users or bought second-hand. With teats and bottles, use them with adult supervision only, inspect a teat before each use and pull it in all directions, throw it away at the first sign of damage or weakness, never use a feeding teat as a soother, and remember that glass can break if dropped. Our team at Leahy's Pharmacy in Tralee stocks the spares as well as the pumps, which matters when a part fails mid-feed, and can check which set fits the pump you already own. If you are establishing or increasing supply, your public health nurse or lactation consultant is the right person to advise on how often to express. For everything else around feeding, also see our breastfeeding range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the S1 and the S2? +
According to the manufacturer, both have the same suction strength and the same modes, and the difference is the power source: the S1 has a built-in rechargeable battery and can be used away from a socket, while the S2 runs from the mains only. Accessories and shield sets are shared between them, so parts bought for one usually fit the other.
How do I choose the right breast shield size? +
Sizing is based on nipple diameter, not breast size, and shields here run from 20mm to 32mm. A shield that fits allows the nipple to move freely in the tunnel without drawing in much of the surrounding tissue. If expressing is uncomfortable or output drops, a different size is often the reason, and our pharmacy team or your lactation consultant can help you check.
Which parts need replacing over time? +
Backflow protectors and silicone tubing wear with use and are the parts most often replaced, while the pump motor itself lasts much longer. Ask our team if you need a spare that is not listed here. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use on cleaning and replacement intervals, and replace any part that is discoloured, stretched or damaged.
Are the Maymom parts genuine Spectra parts? +
No. Maymom is a separate manufacturer whose flanges are described as Spectra compatible, which means they are designed to fit Spectra pumps rather than being supplied by Spectra. They are not covered by Spectra's instructions for use, so check the packaging and follow the instructions supplied with the part. Check the listing before buying if you prefer parts made by the pump manufacturer.
Can the bottles be used for feeding as well as storage? +
The range includes milk storage bottles, glass bottles in 120ml and 240ml, and teats in different flow rates, so check each listing for what it is supplied for. Use bottles and teats with adult supervision only, and inspect a teat before each use. The HSE recommends exclusive breastfeeding for around the first six months; if you are introducing a bottle or teat alongside breastfeeding, your public health nurse or lactation consultant can advise on timing.
