Gaviscon Advance Oral Suspension (aniseed flavour) is a reflux suppressant containing sodium alginate and potassium hydrogen carbonate that forms a protective layer on top of the stomach contents, keeping them away from the lining of the food pipe.
- Used for: symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux such as acid regurgitation, heartburn and indigestion related to reflux, for example after meals, during pregnancy, or in people with symptoms related to reflux oesophagitis
- Active ingredients: sodium alginate 500mg and potassium hydrogen carbonate 100mg in each 5ml
- Size: 600ml; contains no sugar or gluten
- How to use: shake well before use. Adults, including the elderly, and children aged 12 years and over, 5 to 10ml (one to two 5ml spoonfuls) after meals and at bedtime
- Children under 12 years: only on medical advice
- Duration: for short-term treatment only unless advised by your healthcare professional; talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or feel worse after 7 days
- Do not take if: you are allergic to any of the ingredients, including methyl (E218) and propyl (E216) parahydroxybenzoates
- Sodium, potassium and calcium: each 5ml contains 57.85mg sodium, 39.06mg potassium and 40mg calcium; consult your doctor first if you have been advised to follow a diet restricted in any of these, such as a low-salt diet, or if you have reduced kidney function
- Talk to your doctor or pharmacist first if: you need it every day or regularly for a prolonged period, need four or more daily doses for a prolonged period, or have or have had significant kidney or heart disease
- Other medicines: wait at least 2 hours between this medicine and tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron salts, thyroid hormones, chloroquine, bisphosphonates or estramustine
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: can be taken if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; it contains benzyl alcohol, so ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have liver or kidney disease
